How Large Can 8K Stock Photography Be Printed?

An 8K JPG from Affordable Stock Photography is 7680 pixels on the long side. Printed at the magazine-quality standard of 300 dots per inch, that gives you a print roughly 65 centimetres (25.6 inches) wide. Drop to 150 dpi, which is perfectly acceptable for a poster viewed from a metre away, and the same file prints at about 130 centimetres. For a trade-show backdrop or a billboard seen from across a room or a road, 20–50 dpi is normal, and the file goes to several metres.

The formula

The maths is one line: print width in inches = pixel width ÷ dpi. Multiply by 2.54 for centimetres.

  • 7680 ÷ 300 = 25.6 in ≈ 65 cm
  • 7680 ÷ 150 = 51.2 in ≈ 130 cm
  • 7680 ÷ 100 = 76.8 in ≈ 195 cm
  • 7680 ÷ 50 = 153.6 in ≈ 390 cm

For comparison, a 4K file at 3840 pixels wide reaches 12.8 in (about 32.5 cm) at 300 dpi and 65 cm at 150 dpi. Height follows the same rule from the short side; a 16:9 frame at 7680 × 4320 is about 36.6 cm tall at 300 dpi.

DPI is a print setting, not a file property

This is the point that causes the most back-and-forth with print shops. A JPG contains pixels. It may also carry a dpi number in its metadata, but that number changes nothing about the image; it is a hint for layout software about how big to place the picture by default. The same 7680-pixel file "is" 25.6 inches at 300 dpi and 76.8 inches at 100 dpi. Nothing was added or lost. Only the intended output size changed.

So when a printer says "we need 300 dpi," translate that into pixels. Take the physical width they want, multiply by 300, and compare with 7680. A 50 cm wide brochure cover needs 5906 pixels; the 8K file clears that with room to crop. A 2-metre wall panel would need 23,622 pixels at 300 dpi, which no stock photography file provides; the honest answer is that nobody prints a wall panel at 300 dpi, and 100 dpi looks sharp at viewing distance.

Cropping and detail

Cropping reduces the pixel count. If you cut a 7680-wide frame down to a third for a tight composition, you have roughly 2560 pixels left, which is fine for an A5 leaflet at 300 dpi and a large screen at any dpi, but not for a full-bleed A2 poster. Decide the crop before promising a print size.

Screens

For web and app use, 8K is more than any display needs. A 4K monitor is 3840 pixels wide; a phone is around 1200. Export a downscaled copy for the web and keep the 8K original for print. Serving a 7680-pixel JPG on a homepage wastes bandwidth and slows the page for no visible gain.
